APPI Pool & Spa

Serving Santa Cruz For Over 40 Years

What today is APPI Pool & Spa was first established in the early 1960s as Allied Pool Products by Ed Shoemaker, who had previously been building pools for Atlas Pools of Gilroy. Leaving Atlas to pursue his dream of owning his own swimming pool company, Ed and his son Bob focused their efforts on retail sales of swimming pool products, swimming pool construction, service, and repairs at their original location on May Avenue in Santa Cruz.

As chance would have it, Robert D. Roddick, who had prospered in the aerospace industry, and had retired to a comfortable life in Santa Cruz County with his wife Betty and their four children, met Ed Shoemaker in the process of purchasing a swimming pool cleaning machine for their home.

The two men soon became fast friends, developing a shared interest in the emerging swimming pool industry, and even involving themselves in projects together. Eventually, this led to the sale of Allied Pool by Ed to Robert Roddick and his family.

APPI Pool & Spa Founder
APPI Pool & Spa History

Ever the visionary, it hadn’t taken Robert Roddick long to grasp the full potential of what lay ahead in the business of swimming pools and spas. Fueled, as always, by a burning desire to be on the leading edge, Robert enlisted the aid of his wife Betty, her father Dave Whitman, and their offspring, in the growth and day to day operation of what became APPI Pool & Spa. The company’s objectives: to become the acknowledged leader in swimming pool and spa retail, repairs, maintenance, construction, and reconstruction. And to do it in the most quality efficient manner possible.

In 1988, true to the family tradition, son Jon Roddick, who had started working for the business as a teenager, returned full time to the organization. Partnering with his mom Betty, brother Brad, and Uncle Jerry Whitman, they have continued on the path outlined by the original objectives, including guaranteeing client satisfaction with every transaction.
